Killings continue in Syria. Government troops are mounting attacks on opposition forces with heavy machinery.

Backed by tanks after laying a siege of two weeks on Hama, Syrian troops attacked Qalat al Madiq town, killing 40 people.

Developments in Syria will dominate the talks at the Arab League summit held for the first time after Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein rule was overthrown.

The Syrian administration had announced it agreed to a six-article plan drafted by the UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan and aimed at ending the bloodshed in the country.

In a statement prior to the Arab League summit, the USA said Bashar al-Assad administration didn't fulfill the requisites of the peace plan. White House spokesman said they will evaluate al-Assad with his actions, not with his words.

Kofi Annan is expected to brief Arab leaders in Baghdad about his contacts on Syria.
