Posted 16.11.2009 09:15:32 UTC Updated 16.11.2009 09:34:30 UTC Switzerland beat hosts and favourites Nigeria 1-0 to win the 2009 Fifa Under-17 World Cup in Abuja on Sunday. More than 60,000 supporters roared the Eaglets every touch of the ball during the final and the three-time champions had arrived there without having lost a FIFA U-17 World Cup game since 2003. Haris Seferovic headed home the only goal in the 63rd minute to win Switzerland their first Fifa World Cup.
The Golden Eaglets chasing a fourth U-17 world crown, made a good start, putting heavy pressure on the Swiss and creating many scoring chances. But Abdul Jagun, Sani Emmanuel and Aigbe Oliha had their efforts saved or blocked by Swiss goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist. Nigerian coach John Obuh said after the match, "We had our chances but the ball just wouldn’t go in. Luck played a part, but if you don’t score, you don’t win. It’s as simple as that."
Swiss coach Danny Ryser, said "Winning the title is wonderful, but it's important that they don't get carried away. If they think they've made it now then they won't win a thing next year. Still, this is a great moment for Swiss football. We're heading to South Africa with a strong senior team and I hope that some of my lads will be playing in Brazil in 2014 - hopefully with as much success as they've had here in Nigeria!"
Spain finished in third place after beating Colombia 1-0 in the third-place match. Despite a brave Colombia showing in the second half, it was Isco's strike just inside the box in the 75th minute that earned them a narrow victory. |
